Older people and mass media
Nuria Ruiz, Universidad Permanente, Universidad de Alicante
“Older people and the mass media” is the title of a seminar run by the University of Alicante. In the frame of the seminar, groups of older people research and analyse the Spanish media reality in relation to its treatment of older people. The aim is not only to review the image of the older person, but also to reflect on the contribution of older people to society and to find ways how stereotyping of negative character could be stopped.
This initiative was made possible through voluntary work of older students at the Universidad Permanente at University of Alicante (university for older people), who participate in the development of the concept, collection of data and conducting thematic parts of the research, reflections and analysis of results. They are coordinated by professional tutors from the University of Alicante.
The seminar takes place during the University semesters, from October to June, with a biweekly presence in classrooms.
